What Is A Saskatoon Berry?
A Saskatoon berry strongly resembles a blueberry in size and shape, however it is a bit more ‘firm’ than a blueberry and has a sweet, sort of nutty flavour. These berries are commonly found growing across the Canadian prairies and in parts of the U.S.
Wild Saskatoon bushes can grow a considerable height, while wild blueberry bushes are found very close to the ground and the berries are very small. Commercially grown blueberries are larger and are almost a match for size with the Saskatoon berry.
I far prefer to pick wild Saskatoon berries over wild Blueberries! Blueberry picking is laborious, back breaking work, hunched over tiny blueberry bushes for hours, after which time only the bottom of your ice cream pail has been covered! Saskatoon berries on the other hand are far easier! You can pick them standing up, the berries are larger so your pail is fills much faster – it is far more satisfying and easier on your back!
Saskatoon berries are not only delicious, they are also high in antioxidants and freeze very well. So if you have an opportunity to go Saskatoon berry picking be sure to freeze those tasty and healthy morsels for later use!
How Do You Make Saskatoon Berry Crisp?
- Gather all ingredients, preheat oven to 350˚F and lightly grease an 8×8″ baking dish.
- Rinse your berries under cool water and pat dry.
- Sprinkle berries with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and, if you like, a bit of lemon juice.
- Pour berries into an 8×8″ baking dish.
- Combine remaining dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Blend butter into dry mixture with a pastry blender or use your fingers. Blend until crumbly.
- Pour crumble over the berries and pat down slightly.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until topping is golden.
How Do You Store A Fruit Crisp?
Store fruit crisps on the counter for a few days, or in the refrigerator for about a week. You may also freeze a fruit crisp for several months, but I highly doubt it will stay in the freezer that long before someone devours it!
Can Other Fruits Be Used Instead Of Saskatoon Berries?
Yes! I have used this same topping to make an Apple Crisp, Rhubarb Crisp, Peach Crisp and Blueberry Crisp. Mixing the berries for interesting flavor combinations such as Rhubarb Apple or Rhubarb Strawberry, make unique and delicious crisps!
What Is The Best Way To Serve A Berry Crisp?
Serve berry or fruit crisps warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! If you can, bake your crisp and allow it to rest on the counter for about 45-60 minutes before serving. It will be perfectly warm for you and your guests.
You can cook your crisp ahead of time, then warm it slightly before serving. Cover with foil so that it does not dry out or that the topping will not become too browned.
Try cool or cold fruit or berry crisps, topped with whipped cream in place of ice cream for a delicious treat.
If you find a patch of wild Saskatoon berries, be sure to pick them! Eat them fresh, freeze the rest, but be sure to save some for this Saskatoon Berry Crisp!
