Plum Platz (German Plum Cake)
Plum Platz is a type of german plum cake that is simple to make!
This old fashioned dessert is not only easy to make, but delicious as well! It’s made with a slightly sweet cake-like base, followed with a layer of diced fresh plums and sprinkled with a golden streusel topping. It’s a dessert that my grandmother and mother would make, so when I make it I always think of family and home!

What Is A Platz?
A strange word, for sure, platz or ploutz, is a fruit dessert with a cake-like base and streusel topping. Any fruit can be used in this recipe, but my father’s family (where the recipe came from) and then my mother, always made it with plums.
Simple Platz Recipe
- This is a simple dessert that has stood the test of time. Platz, or ploutz, has been made in my family for generations! As a child, I was scared of it because of the strange name – what the heck is a platz! But once I gave it a chance, I realized how tasty it really was.
- You can easily modify the recipe to include any fruit.
- Platz makes a perfectly portable dessert for a potluck or barbecue.
Easy Ingredients
BASE: A simple mixture of butter, brown sugar, flour, eggs, vanilla, baking soda and cream of tartar make up the cake like base in this Plum Platz.
FRUIT: While this recipe calls for plums, use any fruit! Peaches would be especially delicious, or use any berry such as blueberries, or Saskatoon berries. Even rhubarb or a combination of favorite fruits would work. Use fresh, or frozen fruit and make this dessert all year long.
TOPPING: The streusel topping is so simple, made with butter, sugar and flour. Try it on a pie instead of a pie crust for a delicious variation!
How To Make Plum Platz
- Blend butter and brown sugar, then add the egg and vanilla.
- Mix in the dry ingredients to form a dough. Spread over baking dish.
- Dice plums and place over dough.
- Mix streusel ingredients together, sprinkle over fruit and bake.
How To Serve German Plum Cake
Platz can be served plain, but it’s especially good with a bit of ice cream. I have also seen it served warm with a bit of heavy cream poured over top – so indulgent!
A platz could be served for any occasion. From a simple dinner with friends or family, to holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas, a fruit platz is always delicious.
