Ingredients and Variations

Marshmallows: Use soft and fresh white marshmallows for the best results! If they are not fresh, the Rice Krispie squares can become hard. Not enjoyable.

  • This recipe uses 50 large marshmallows or 5 cups mini marshmallows, while the original asks for 40. Use the original recipe if prefered.
  • Mix in a swirl of peanut butter or melted chocolate to the marshmallow mixture.

Butter: Use the real thing here for best flavor.

  • If in a pinch, use margarine.

Crisp Rice Cereal: Really any brand will do, but Kellogg Rice Krispies are the gold standard.

  • Use fun colors of crisp rice cereal to suit the occasion. During the holidays, use the red and white colors, and the pastel colors for Easter.

Flavoring: Vanilla is a great way to add delicious taste.

  • Experiment with any flavored extract you like.

Add-Ins: Chocolate chips, chopped nuts, dried fruits or sprinkles for a fun variation.

Tips for Success

  • Use the freshest ingredients for the best texture and flavor.
  • Melt butter and marshmallows over low, to medium low heat for a smooth mixture and reduced chance of burning.
  • Be sure to grease pan, pot and spatula with butter or non-stick spray for easier mixing.
  • Don’t press the marshmallow Rice Krispie mixture too hard, as this will create a dense and hard square.
  • Use a 9×13 inch pan to stretch the recipe a bit, and enjoy a thinner treat.
  • Cover with plastic wrap when cooling and storing Rice Krispie squares so they do not dry out.
  • Cut squares with a very sharp knife.
