What’s In Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats?
The basic ingredients for the classic treat are used in this recipe.
- Crisp rice cereal, marshmallows, butter and vanilla are used in this recipe, and are pantry staples that every home baker should have on hand at all times!
- Be sure to use fresh Rice Krispie cereal and soft marshmallows for the best results.
- With a simple addition of chocolate chips, this recipe becomes a gooey favorite! Use dark chocolate or semi sweet chocolate chips, depending on the desired sweetness level. Or use peanut butter or butterscotch chips in place of chocolate for a new taste variation.
Note: Add in’s can include colorful sprinkles throughout the mixture or over the top, chopped nuts, or even drizzle the top with a white or chocolate glaze.
How To Make Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
- Measure all ingredients, and line a 9×9 inch pan with parchment paper.
- Melt butter and marshmallows.
- Turn heat to low, add vanilla and chocolate chips. Mix.
- Remove from heat, add cereal. Toss to coat.
- Press mixture into pan. Once cooled and set, remove using parchment and cut into squares.
How To Store Marshmallow Treats
These chocolatey treats can be stored at room temperature covered with foil for 4-5 days. Or store them in a zippered bag with parchment between the layers so that they don’t stick together.
Since these do not need to be refrigerated, it is a perfect snack to bring along on a camping trip, on the boat, or on a hike. These gooey treats can also be wrapped individually for easy transport, or to pop into work or school lunches. Why not enjoy it with an afternoon coffee on a cool fall afternoon?

Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
Equipment
- 9×9 inch pan
- large non stick pot
- parchment paper
- rubber scraper
Ingredients
- 1 bag marshmallows 250g bag
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal , or other crisp rice cereal
- butter to grease hands
Instructions
- Prepare a 9×9 inch pan with parchment paper or foil. If using foil, spray with a non-stick spray.
- Melt ½ cup butter over medium heat in a large non-stick pot. Add marshmallows and as they melt, stir well to mix with the butter.
- Remove from heat, add chocolate chips and vanilla. Stir until combined.
- Add Rice Krispies and mix until coated.
- Press mixture into pan using greased hands. Do not press too hard, just enough to keep it together.
- Allow to cool, then remove from pan with parchment paper (or foil) and cut into squares.
Notes
- Line pan with parchment paper, or foil. If using foil, spray with a non stick spray.
- Keep treats covered in a sealed container, or wrapped in foil or plastic wrap for 4-5 days at room temperature.Â
- Wrap individually in plastic, then in a zippered bag and keep frozen for 2 months.Â
