Chocolate Dirt Cake Recipe
This particular recipe was made as an Easter Dirt Cake for our family gathering. We are travelling 4 hours to get to my parent’s home, and it’s in the cooler in the back of the truck as we speak. We just checked it and everything is good, so I know it travels well!
Dirt Cakes are a no fuss, no muss dessert. Their imperfection is what makes them so perfect!
Indulgent flavors of chocolate pudding, Oreo cookies, cream cheese and peanut butter are combined in this creamy and tasty treat. And it can be assembled in only about 20 minutes start to finish! Just set in the refrigerator to set until it’s time to indulge.
What Goes In Oreo Dirt Cake?
OREOS! What is an Oreo Dirt Cake without Oreos? Well, just a dirt cake! But if there are no Oreos in the pantry, use other chocolate cookies or chocolate cookie crumbs. Why not get inventive and crush up other types of cookies like peanut butter or even chocolate chunk!
PUDDING! Instant chocolate pudding is called for in this recipe, but don’t let that stop you. Use any pudding flavor that fits the mood or is a family favorite!
CREAM CHEESE! The cream cheese addition is a great way to make this super creamy and delicious. Cream cheese and chocolate? Who doesn’t love that!
PEANUT BUTTER! Not all Oreo Dirt Cake recipes call for peanut butter, but for me it just makes sense! If peanut butter is not something that you want to include, either because of food sensitivities or just a personal preference, just substitute butter in place of the peanut butter. Easy peasy fix!
COOL WHIP! This is a chef’s best friend when time is tight, or just not in the mood to whip cream. It is stable so it’s great when the dessert needs to withstand a bit of heat before being served. But if you prefer, use whipping cream in place of the cool whip – will be so delicious!
How To Make Dirt Cake
Quick and easy prep, who doesn’t love that?
- Crush Oreo Cookies, mix in peanut butter. Set aside.
- Make pudding and refrigerate.
- Cream together peanut butter, cream cheese, vanilla and powdered sugar.
- Add pudding and mix till combined.
- Fold in cool whip.
- Layer pudding with crushed Oreo mixture as desired.
- Decorate top as desired and garnish with Cool Whip to serve.
Best Dirt Cake!
Some time savers that might help are right here!
- Crush up the Oreos ahead of time. And use a food processor if you have one. If you don’t, place cookies in a zippered bag and work out your tensions and frustrations on those cookies with a rolling pin!
- Soften the cream cheese in the microwave for about 20 seconds to make it easier to blend.
- Be sure to use whole milk, or use the combination of 1% and cream. It just makes the pudding more rich and delicious!
- The trifle bowl used in the photos is from Stokes and has an 8″ diameter. It was perfect for the amount of dirt cake in this recipe. A larger bowl will also work, a 9×13″ pan, or even scoop into individual dirt cake cups for a fun hand held treat!
Let’s Get Decorating!
Use your imagination to decorate this delicious Oreo dirt cake any which way!
- Use Bunny Ears! I made two bunny ears super easily by cutting a marshmallow in half on the diagonal, exposing the sticky inside. Then dipped that sticky part into colored sugar making the cute bunny ears. I simply stuck them into the ‘dirt’ making it look like my bunny was hiding!
- Simply crush colored candies and sprinkle over the dirt. Use candy coated chocolates, such as M&M’s or Smarties, that fit the occasion. Try pastels for Easter, red & green for Christmas, or even orange and brown for Halloween. Use anything that would fit the occasion like a baby shower, wedding shower, or birthday.
- GUMMIES! Of course the favorite, and likely most popular, decoration is gummy worms! Everyone loves them!
- This peanut butter infused dirt cake would be really delicious with chopped Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups all over the top or even within the layers!
I hope you have fun making this Oreo Dirt Cake Recipe this holiday or any time of the year! It’s just chocolate decadence in every bite.
