What Materials Do I Need To Steam A Pudding?
All the items you will need to properly steam a pudding are likely already in your kitchen!
- Heat proof bowl with a lip – I have used my large Pyrex measuring cup in the past as well as my glass mixing bowls. Both work equally well.
- A large pot – this pot needs to be wide enough to fit your heat proof bowl, allowing a bit of room on the sides. It also needs to be deep enough that the lid will fit over the pudding bowl.
- A trivet or pasta insert – this is an essential item! I have a pot with a pasta insert, but if you do not then a trivet will do. We want the pudding to be surrounded by the boiling water, not sitting on the direct heat. I have used a metal apple slicer for this task which has also worked well.
- Kitchen string – absolutely necessary to help seal the bowl and create a handle for removal.
- Tin foil
- Parchment paper
- Scissors or kitchen shears
How To Steam A Pudding
- Choose your heat safe bowl, large pot and trivet to be sure that it will all fit together properly. The pot should be large enough that the bowl will fit in with room. The trivet should be heat proof as well.
- Prepare your pudding, place it in the bowl and set aside.
- Cut a large piece of parchment and an equally sized piece of foil. Lay them together on the counter and fold into a “pleat” in the middle. This is important to allow for expansion.
- Place it parchment side down over the glass bowl and mold it to the bowl.
- Tie kitchen string around and under the lip of the bowl. Proceed to tie string across to make a handle. Tie securely so that it will not slip.
- Bring water to a boil then using the handle, carefully place pudding over boiling water. Cover with a lid and boil for recommended amount of time.
- Once pudding is cooked, using tongs or heat proof gloves, hold the string and remove the pudding from the pot. If you have a pasta insert, you can easily take the whole insert out, and cool completely.
