Homemade Chocolate Sauce

Chocolate sauce can be used for so many things! My first love is, of course, to use it as an ice cream topping, but don’t limit yourself to just ice cream! This makes a super dip for fruit or marshmallows, a luscious topping for a cake, brownie, skillet cookie, or cheesecake, and my kids like to use it to top their pancakes for a special breakfast treat!

How do you make Chocolate Sauce?

This homemade chocolate sauce could not be easier!

  1. Combine all ingredients (except vanilla) in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer for only 1 minute.
  3. Add vanilla and stir.
  4. Cool slightly before using as a topping.

How to store homemade chocolate sauce

  • Store unused portion at room temperature for 1-2 days (if there is any left!)
  • Should you want to store it for longer, store it in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. It may become a bit granulated in texture being stored in the fridge, so warm slightly in the microwave and stir to smooth it out before using.

This Chocolate Sauce recipe is so easy and versatile. If you want to add a bit of a coffee flavor, use strong coffee instead of water. Either reduce or increase the cocoa depending on your preference! If you want to use it as a syrup instead of a sauce, simply add a bit more water to thin it out.

A jar of homemade chocolate sauce makes the perfect gift! There is just something so special about receiving a homemade, heartfelt gift! So tie a red ribbon around the lid of a jar of chocolate sauce and give it to that special someone! Perfect for Valentines Day (which is fast approaching)!
