Old Fashioned Goodness!
This recipe is one that my grandmother used. Cookbooks in her time were written by hand and shared with friends or folks in the community. Wouldn’t the bakers of the past be amazed how we share recipes today! So thank you Mrs. Oster for your inspiration and for sharing with my grandmother!
- This is a tried and true recipe that has literally stood the test of time!
- Mild and delicious, soft and chewy, these brown sugar cookies are just perfect with a cup of tea or afternoon coffee.
- Cookies always make a quick and easy grab and go snack or treat. Sneak one into the workbox lunch of someone you love!
Cookie Ingredients
Brown Sugar: Obviously, this cookie would not be the same without brown sugar! Use light or dark brown sugar depending on preference.
Butter: I have used salted butter in this recipe, however unsalted works as well. Just add a dash of salt to the dough as the flour is mixed in.
Flour: Use an all purpose flour, but be sure to sift it before measuring. If you do not have a sifter, sprinkle the flour into a measuring cup and use about ½ cup less than the recipe states. Almond flour would be a good substitute, just use a touch less than called for in the recipe.
Cinnamon: This is one of my most favorite spices, and reminds me a bit of the jumbo raisin cookies my grandmother on my dad’s side used to make. If you don’t have cinnamon, use half the amount of pumpkin pie spice, or a dash of nutmeg.
Almonds: Use sliced almonds, but slivered, or chopped will also work. Add in other favorite nuts like pecans or walnuts, or add some chocolate chips, raisins or M&M’s. Or use a combination of add-ins for a unique recipe.
How To Make Brown Sugar Cookies
These tasty hand held treats can be made in 2 ways; either formed into a roll, refrigerated and sliced to bake, or mixed and baked right away. So no matter if you want fresh cookies right away, or as you need them, this recipe is for you!
- Cream together butter and brown sugar.
- Add eggs and blend well.
- Mix together sifted flour, cinnamon and soda. Add to creamed mixture.
- Add almonds (or other mix in’s). Do not over mix.
To Bake Now:
- Drop by spoonful onto baking sheet.
- Bake for 8 minutes.
- Allow to rest 2 minutes on baking sheet.
- Finish cooling on rack.
To Bake Later:
- Use parchment paper to roll dough into a 2″ diameter roll. Wrap with plastic wrap. (You will need likely 3 rolls – 12 cookies each)
- Refrigerate overnight.
- Unroll and slice into ½” thick cookies.
- Place on baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.
- Allow to rest 2 minutes on baking sheet.
- Finish cooling on rack.
Best Ways To Store Cookies!
For the freshest cookies, store them in a covered container, or zippered bag, at room temperature for about 3-4 days or in the refrigerator for about a week. In my opinion, cookies are best preserved in the freezer in a sealed container (I love used ice cream pails for this!) for 2-3 months.
If frozen, just thaw on the counter and enjoy. Or pop them into the toaster oven to heat quickly. Even the air fryer will heat cookies up in a flash, just be careful not to burn. Warmed cookies are so delicious, just like fresh from the oven.
I hope you have success making this old fashioned recipe. They are a comforting and delicious treat that I hope everyone in your house will love!
