What is Puffed Wheat?

Puffed Wheat is created by ‘puffing’ up the wheat grain using methods similar to how you would pop popcorn. This process has been done for many years.

While it can be enjoyed as a breakfast cereal with milk, I prefer to use it for special treats like these puffed wheat squares!

How to Make Puffed Wheat Squares

Learning how to make puffed wheat squares could not be easier!

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Measure puffed wheat into a large bowl.
  • In a saucepan, combine all remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil then simmer for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla.
  • Pour over the puffed wheat and combine.
  • Press into a baking sheet using a spoon or your greased hands.
  • Cool, then remove from pan to slice.

Best Pan For Puffed Wheat Cake?

I like to use a large cookie sheet. The one I have is about 18×12″ and 1″ deep which I find makes a nice, thin piece of cake. You can also use a 9×13″ baking dish which of course will make a thicker piece of cake.

Tips to make the perfect Puffed Wheat Squares

  • If you prefer a more gooey puffed wheat cake:
    • reduce the amount of puffed wheat.
    • reduce the cook time for the sauce.
  • Be sure to use parchment paper to line your baking sheet. This will make removal and cutting into squares much easier.
  • Use a greased rubber scraper to mix.
  • Press into pan with greased hands.
  • Wrap each individual piece in plastic wrap, then place in a zippered bag for an easy grab-n-go snack!
  • You can also pop these wrapped treats in the freezer to enjoy later!
