Best Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe
- This recipe uses simple ingredients that you likely have in your pantry, or are easy to find at your local market.
- You can customize this recipe to be as mild, spicy, sweet or savory, as you like. Add more, or less, of any spices according to your own preference!
- Use fresh herbs and spices for extra flavor. Be sure to use a bit less if you are using fresh, because they do tend to be stronger and more robust.
Ingredients and Variations
All you need are a few pantry staple ingredients and you are ready!
- Tomato Sauce – the super easy way is to simply use your favorite canned tomato sauce. But you can also make your own homemade tomato sauce if you choose.
- Blanch 1 pound tomatoes to remove the skin, then blend in a food processor. Add to a saucepan with 1 Tablespoon vinegar, a dash of salt and 1/4 teaspoon sugar. Simmer to reduce liquid, until desired consistency. Season to taste.
- Tomato Paste – canned tomato paste is the most simple option.
- Herbs and Spices
- I love using Italian seasoning as the base seasoning for this pizza sauce. And I use it in so many recipes like pasta sauce, meatballs, zucchini sticks, you name it!
- Add garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, seasoning salt and sugar. You can add more, or less, of each seasoning depending on how you like it. Add in some hot pepper flakes, or a hot pepper sauce like Tobasco, for a bit of kick!
- Parsley – I love fresh parsley, but you can use the dried variety too.
- Oil – Olive oil is best, but you can use vegetable oil if that is all you have.
