Just 5 ingredients and only 5 minutes are needed for this sweet dessert sauce!
This recipes is so easy! There are no tricks, no need to check for a “soft ball stage” or anything complicated. This recipe makes a delish sauce every time!
What’s In This Caramel Sauce?
Create a luscious caramel topping with these easy ingredients!
- Butter – use salted butter for best flavor and no need to add salt. If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the mixture. RECIPE TIP: Brown the butter first to give this sauce a delicious, rich flavor.
- Brown sugar – a dark brown sugar is delicious for this sauce, but light brown sugar can also be used.
- Cream – use a heavy cream that has a fat content over 30%. Whipping cream is perfect!
- Vanilla – regular vanilla extract is perfect but if using pure vanilla, reduce amount to 1/4 teaspoon. Other flavors can also be substituted. Rum, coconut or maple would be tasty combinations.
- Vinegar – this is an important addition. It keeps the caramel sauce from becoming grainy. So don’t skip it! Lemon juice can be used as a substitute and works well.

- Add butter, milk and brown sugar to sauce pan.
- Melt, then bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Boil for 1 minute. Add vanilla and vinegar.
- Cool and pour into container.

Easy Homemade Caramel Sauce
Equipment
- saucepan
- rubber scraper
Ingredients
- 1½ cups brown sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream
- â…“ cup salted butter
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla
- ½ teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice
Instructions
- Over low heat, melt butter, brown sugar and cream.
- Bring to a rolling boil and keep there for 1 minute.
- Remove from heat. Add vanilla and vinegar.
- Cool, stirring occasionally. Pour into container.
Notes
- Begin the 1 minute cook time after the sauce has come to a full rolling boil.
- Allow sauce cool in the sauce pan and stir it occasionally.
- If crystals begin to form on the sides of the pan, heat slowly and add a touch more vinegar.
