Black Bean Chili Recipe Ingredients

Beef: Use a lean ground beef for this recipe or change it up and use ground chicken or turkey or chicken. Why not omit the meat and make a vegetarian version for a change of pace.

Beans: Black beans are a delicious option, but don’t stop there! Try pinto beans or red kidney beans as well, or add them all for a 3 bean chili. No matter the choice, it’s a protein packed and flavor filled dish.

Tomato Based Sauce: A simple sauce made with tomato sauce, tomato paste and beef broth is all that’s neededd for this slow cooked chili. For those who prefer diced or even whole tomatoes, add them in!

Vegetables: Savory garlic and onions start this chili off, and corn and green chilis add even more flavor! Why not add in some mushrooms, green or red peppers if you like.

Seasonings: A flavorful combination of chili powder, cumin and paprika, with a dash of salt and pepper to taste, are all you need. Or use this all-in-one homemade chili seasoning instead. Some Franks Red Hot sauce or chili flakes can kick up the heat a bit too.

Make This Black Bean Chili Recipe

  1. Cook ground beef in a skillet until brown and drain any excess grease. Add cooked beef to the slow cooker.
  2. In the same skillet, saute the onion and garlic. Add to the slow cooker.
  3. Continue by adding all remaining ingredients to the slow cooker.
  4. It’s recommended to slow cook with the lid on low for 8-10 hours for best flavor. But it can also be cooked on high for 4-5 hours.

How To Serve Black Bean Chili

This recipe is perfect for crowds because it will stay warm in the Crockpot and everyone can help themselves! Create a party table with hot dogs, nachos or even tater tots and use the chili as a topping. Keep bowls of shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream on hand for extra garnishes. Add trays filled with deviled eggs and tomato mozzarella basil skewers for easy add ons. Be sure to have plenty of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies on hand for dessert!

Storing Chili

Allow chili to cool, then refrigerate covered for 4-5 days. Freeze in batches using containers or zippered bags for up to 3 months.

Chili can be reheated from frozen, in a slow cooker, in the microwave or on the stove top. Or thaw in the refrigerator first before reheating.

Recipe Tips!

While you could just add all the ingredients into the slow cooker and let it cook, taking the time to sauté the onions and garlic before adding to the crockpot will make the chili taste even better! Onions become more sweet and garlic becomes more mellow, with better flavor!

The slow cooker is the perfect tool to help the flavors cook and meld together over a low and slow temperature. I try to cook chili on low for 6-8 hours for best flavor, or if short on time the high setting will work too.

And leftover chili tastes even better the next day as the flavors continue to blend and develop! So make a big batch and enjoy it as leftovers for dinner or lunch all week, or freeze portions for later.
